Introduction
Microsoft is reimagining Copilot to enable work as it evolves and to help expand what every individual and every organization can accomplish.
The new Copilot connects the tools people rely on with the next generation of capabilities they'll need to build, customize, and scale AI across work. The Copilot app now has three new capabilities:
Home
Your new starting point, where Chat and Cowork come together — with Office built in.
Code
Build your own solutions safely, powered by the same technology as GitHub Copilot.
Autopilot
A persistent, proactive, personal agent that keeps working even when you're not.
Rollout: Home and Code start rolling out in the Frontier program in the coming weeks. Autopilot is expanding to private preview at the end of the month. This blog is based on Microsoft's official announcement by Jared Spataro (September 25, 2026).
Microsoft is also introducing new FinOps for AI capabilities to help organizations manage spend and get the most value from Copilot and agents.
Home: Your New Starting Point
Home is your new starting point in Copilot, where Chat and Cowork come together in one place. As work moves constantly between meetings, chats, documents, emails, apps, and agents, Home is where you get your bearings.
- Review recent activity — See what you were working on
- Get suggestions — Copilot recommends what it can help with
- Pick up where you left off — Continue work seamlessly
Chat vs Cowork
| Mode | Best For |
|---|---|
| Chat | Instant and conversational — quick questions, lookups, draft creation, keeping you in the loop |
| Cowork | Work you delegate — define the task and it runs end-to-end (RFP response, launch kit, customer briefing, financial close package) |
Coming soon: You won't need to choose a mode. Simply state what you need to accomplish, and Copilot will route the work to Chat, Cowork, or Code — whichever capability is right for the job.
Office in Copilot: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Baked In
Microsoft is bringing the full power of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to Copilot with Office in Copilot. Now you can get to real work fast:
- No broken formatting — Documents render correctly
- No stray versions — Everything stays in sync
- No rebuilding context — Work moves between apps seamlessly
From Home, you can ask Copilot to:
- Draft a launch brief — In a real Word document
- Model a budget — In a real Excel workbook
- Build a deck — In a real PowerPoint presentation
- Pick up a file your team is already working on
These are real, editable documents, workbooks, or presentations — live for your whole team, not just you. You can refine alongside your conversation, or @mention a teammate and their edits show up as they make them.
What's New in the Office Apps
- PowerPoint — Decks stay on-brand automatically; fine-tune slides and images or apply custom templates
- Excel — See exactly what changed and why when Copilot or a collaborator makes edits; Copilot recommends the best chart to visualize your data
- Microsoft 365 Skills — Specialized expertise inside apps, like financial skills in Excel and legal skills in Word, enabling organizations to scale best practices through reusable, role-specific workflows
Code: Everyone Can Build Solutions
Code moves solution-building outside the realm of developers alone. To date, the unit of knowledge work has been the file: the document, the spreadsheet, the deck. Those aren't going anywhere — but Code adds a fourth: small, purpose-built solutions anyone can create to get a job done.
"Learning to build them is becoming as basic a skill as writing a memo or modeling a budget."
— Jared Spataro, Chief Marketing Officer, AI at WorkDescribe an app, tracker, dashboard, automation, or workflow in natural language, and Copilot chooses an approach and builds it. Types of solutions you can build:
- Persistent desktop widgets — For quick reference
- Interactive dashboards — For exploring data and testing outcomes
- Cloud-hosted internal apps — You can share with your team
Code is powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, runs in a sandboxed environment, and can be hosted securely within your tenant. With Microsoft IQ, everything you create is grounded in the context of your work, and plugins sync automatically.
Rollout: Code is rolling out to Frontier at the end of the month, with broad availability in the coming weeks. It will be in preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year.
Copilot Managed Runtime: Safe, Governed Execution
As it gets easier and faster to build in Copilot, Microsoft is introducing Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime — hosting infrastructure that lets code run safely right inside your company's Microsoft 365 environment.
- Governed by IT — Enterprise controls enforced
- Easy for everyone else — Share an app with teammates, connect it to live data, access it from anywhere
- Same foundation — Enables apps built in Cowork, Code, and Copilot Studio
- Open to developers — Third-party and pro-code developers too
Copilot Managed Runtime is now in preview and will also be accessible inside Code.
Autopilot: Your Digital Teammate
Autopilot (previously called Scout) is your digital teammate. And it works for you:
- Give it a name, a role, and a goal — Then it goes to work
- Watches channels — Following up on threads
- Runs recurring work — Automating the routine
- Picks projects back up days later — Without waiting for a prompt
Example use case: Autopilot can set up and manage a full supplier review process — building the schedule and workback plan, then handling prep, meetings, and follow-ups on its own, right down to reaching out to stakeholders for updates.
Autopilot is cloud-hosted, so it keeps working while you sleep or your attention is elsewhere — no constant monitoring required.
How Autopilot Lives in Your Tenant
- Its own identity — Treated as a distinct entity
- Memory and workspace — Persistent context
- Built on Microsoft IQ — Understands how your organization actually works
- Shows up where people work — Teams, Outlook, chats, channels, and documents
- @mention it like a colleague — With permissions, audit, and governance behind it
"You set the objective and boundaries; Autopilot handles the rest while keeping you informed and in control."
— MicrosoftExpanding Your Business Context
Copilot is grounded in Microsoft IQ — the unified intelligence platform for enterprise AI across your Microsoft stack, connecting how the business operates with the knowledge it holds into one real-time view.
Microsoft is expanding the business context available to Copilot:
- Fabric IQ — Brings trusted context from your data, including the 20+ million semantic models in Power BI. Grounds Chat and Cowork; generally available in both today. Code integration coming through the Frontier program soon.
- Dynamics 365 and Power Platform — Rolling out over the next month in public preview. Copilot is now grounded in data and workflows from these platforms.
Practical example: When a salesperson is working on a proposal, Copilot can incorporate data like deal history and support tickets directly into the document — no app-switching or distracting lookups required.
Plugins: The Unified Plugin Registry
Plugins extend what Copilot can do, bringing together skills, connectors, and other capabilities so users can complete more workflows without leaving the apps they use every day.
- Unified catalog — Microsoft, partner, and custom-built plugins together
- Central IT management — Approve and manage plugins centrally
- Publish once — Developers and partners can extend Copilot across supported experiences
Managing AI Spend: USL, UBB, and FinOps for AI
Microsoft is evolving Copilot pricing alongside evolving AI capabilities. Two pricing models coexist:
User Subscription License (USL)
- Best for everyday AI — quick answers, first drafts, summaries, analysis
- Fixed cost
- Copilot in Chat and across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
- Model selection
- New capabilities and models
- Auto at the heart — weighs accuracy, speed, and cost on each request
Usage-Based Billing (UBB)
- Best for agentic work — best quality with the most advanced models
- Full control to choose models
- Match cost to value
- Powers Cowork, Code, and Autopilot
- New long-running agentic capabilities
- Frontier models like Astra and Fable
FinOps for AI: New Capabilities
FinOps for AI is a shared discipline for managing AI spend and optimizing it for business value. Microsoft is introducing new capabilities across Agent 365, Insights, and Microsoft Copilot:
- Cost management in Agent 365 — Expanding beyond Cowork and Work IQ APIs to include Code and Copilot Managed Runtime; support for agents built in Microsoft Copilot Studio planned for October
- Spending policies at scale — Admins can manage with API access
- Route credit requests — Into existing approval and automation workflows
- Model family controls — Set which model families are available to different groups of users
- Business insight — Leaders and admins can understand which Cowork tasks generate the strongest outcomes
- End-user visibility — Users can view credit usage, remaining balances, and usage history directly in Microsoft Copilot
A Sneak Peek: Today and @Copilot in Teams
Microsoft teased two upcoming capabilities:
Today
Coming soon in Home, Today is a proactive, personalized command center across mail, calendar, Teams threads, meetings, and tasks. It shows you:
- What you missed
- What needs attention now
- What can wait
Today doesn't just surface the work — it gets work done. The draft is written and ready for you to edit; the schedule change is already proposed; the forgotten follow-up is waiting for you to send it, complete with context.
Today enters private preview in October in Copilot, and will be coming to Outlook and Teams as well.
@Copilot in Teams
When you invoke @Copilot in Teams, your entire team gets the shared context and permissions of the channel, group chat, or meeting. Ask why a product decision was made, and Copilot pulls the background from across conversations — no digging, no re-explaining.
When that decision ripples into manufacturing, packaging, and launch timing, Copilot goes further: it offers to prepare a cross-functional review with dependencies, owners, open questions, and decisions.
The @Copilot capability will be in private preview in Teams by the end of the month.
Why This Matters for Every Business
This is one of the most significant Copilot updates since the product launched. Here's why it matters:
- Copilot becomes a platform, not just an assistant — Home, Code, and Autopilot turn Copilot into a workspace where work actually happens
- Office is now inside Copilot — No more app-switching; real documents, workbooks, and presentations created and edited in chat
- Citizen development goes mainstream — Code lets any employee build apps, dashboards, and workflows
- Agents become digital teammates — Autopilot has its own identity, memory, and workspace; it works while you sleep
- Governance is central — Copilot Managed Runtime, Plugin Registry, and FinOps for AI mean IT keeps control
- Pricing gets nuanced — USL for everyday, UBB for agentic; Auto intelligently routes requests
- Context expands dramatically — Fabric IQ and Dynamics 365 grounding mean Copilot understands your business
With great power comes great governance risk. Autopilot agents working autonomously, Code apps connecting to business data, and UBB costs scaling with usage all require IT oversight that most SMBs don't have in place.
Why Businesses Rely on Managed IT Services for the New Copilot
Here's the reality: the new Copilot is powerful, but it's also a significant shift in how work happens inside your business. Autopilot agents working without prompts. Code apps built by any employee. Usage-based billing that can scale quickly. Copilot Managed Runtime hosting custom code inside your tenant.
That's where Managed IT Services (MSPs) come in. A modern MSP provides the governance framework, technical controls, and ongoing oversight that make the new Copilot safe — and actually valuable — for the business.
What a Managed IT Services Partner Does for the New Copilot
When you enable Home, Code, Autopilot, and Copilot Managed Runtime, your MSP partner should be managing the governance layer from day one. Here's what that looks like:
- Copilot Managed Runtime oversight — Ensuring code runs within your tenant boundary with proper controls
- Autopilot agent governance — Reviewing agent identity, memory, permissions, and audit trails
- Code app lifecycle management — Governing what employees build and where it's deployed
- Plugin Registry administration — Approving, managing, and securing plugins from Microsoft, partners, and custom builds
- FinOps for AI implementation — Setting spending policies, model family controls, and cost guardrails
- Microsoft IQ grounding review — Ensuring Fabric IQ and Dynamics 365 data access is properly scoped
- Agent 365 cost management — Tracking usage across Cowork, Code, and Copilot Managed Runtime
- Office in Copilot governance — Securing document, workbook, and presentation access
- Compliance alignment — Mapping new Copilot capabilities to SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001, and other frameworks
- User enablement — Training employees on safe Copilot usage, especially with Autopilot and Code
Why SMBs Choose Managed IT Over DIY
For most organizations, the "we'll figure out the governance later" approach falls apart quickly when Copilot becomes this powerful:
- Autopilot runs without prompts — Agents working autonomously need real oversight
- Code makes everyone a developer — Thousands of small apps will be built; they need governance
- Copilot Managed Runtime hosts custom code — Inside your tenant, where your data lives
- UBB costs scale with usage — Unmonitored agentic work can balloon quickly
- Plugin sprawl is real — Without central management, apps connect to systems they shouldn't
- Compliance exposure grows — More apps, more data flows, more risk surface
- Skill gap — Copilot governance, FinOps, and agent oversight are specialized, emerging skills
If your organization is rolling out the new Copilot — and you don't have a governance framework in place — a Managed IT Services partner can help you enable it safely, control costs, and protect data.
What to Ask a Potential MSP Partner About the New Copilot
If you're evaluating MSPs (or wondering whether your current one is ready for this), ask these questions:
- Do you have controls for Copilot Managed Runtime and the code that runs there?
- How do you govern Autopilot agents and their autonomous work?
- Can you manage the Plugin Registry and enforce connector policies?
- Do you have FinOps for AI experience — spending policies, model family controls, credit approvals?
- How do you review Code apps before they connect to business data?
- Are you tracking costs across USL and UBB?
- Do you offer Copilot training for employees on Autopilot and Code best practices?
At SystemLogicIT, we provide Managed IT Services and Microsoft 365 governance tailored to businesses across the United States and United Kingdom. If your organization is adopting the new Copilot and wants a partner who can enable it safely, we'd be glad to talk.
What Businesses Should Do
Whether you manage IT in-house or through a partner, here's a practical checklist for enabling the new Copilot safely:
- Join the Frontier program — To test Home and Code as they roll out
- Plan for Autopilot private preview — Prepare governance before agents go live
- Define a Copilot governance framework — Before enabling broad access
- Configure Copilot Managed Runtime policies — When it becomes available in your tenant
- Set up Plugin Registry administration — Approve plugins centrally
- Implement FinOps for AI — Spending policies, model controls, and cost guardrails
- Review Microsoft IQ data access — Fabric IQ and Dynamics 365 grounding require careful scoping
- Train employees — Especially on Autopilot and Code best practices
- Establish an app review process — Before Code apps connect to sensitive data
- Monitor usage and costs — Track USL and UBB separately
- Engage a Managed IT Services partner — If Copilot governance isn't feasible in-house
If your organization needs help building a Copilot governance framework, configuring FinOps, or managing agent oversight, consider working with a Managed IT Services partner.
Final Thoughts
The new Copilot represents a meaningful evolution. Home, Code, and Autopilot don't just add features — they change what Copilot is. It becomes a workspace where work happens, a platform where anyone can build, and a system where agents work alongside you.
Office in Copilot brings the full power of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into the chat. Copilot Managed Runtime lets apps run safely inside your tenant. Fabric IQ and Dynamics 365 grounding connect Copilot to real business context. FinOps for AI gives organizations control over spend.
But all of this power requires governance. Autopilot agents running without prompts. Code apps built by any employee. Usage-based billing that scales. These aren't problems for later — they need to be solved before rollout.
Key takeaways:
